Least Terns are the smallest North American terns. They can be found nesting along Gulf Coast beaches and along sandbars of the Mississippi Rivers and its tributaries.A Least Tern wheels above the Mississippi River.Looking down into the Mississippi River in search of food.Got one!Nests are nothing more than "scrapes" or shallow depressions in the sand. The eggs blend in very well with the sand, which makes them difficult for predators to find.A tern may fly out over the water and dip her belly several times on a hot day and come back to cool the eggs from the scorching sun.
